Golf: West Linton book place in quarters

WEST LINTON booked the first of the quarter-final spots as neighbours Glencorse, last year's beaten finalists, resurrected their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out phase in this season's Pollock (Scotrans) Ltd Edinburgh Summer League.

A crushing home win over Newbattle, who could only muster a couple of halves against Simon Mackenzie's high-flying side, sealed top spot for West Linton in Section C.
"We're looking forward to the quarter-finals and having home home advantage will
be a bonus," admitted former Scottish Amateur champion Mackenzie.

Duddingston made home advantage count in the same section to beat Bruntsfield Links in a very sporting but well-contested match. The final score was 4…-3…, with the result was uncertain until the last match after the lead changed hands almost with every game.

Gus Santana covered the front nine in four-under thanks to an eagle at the fifth as well as three birdies, and he went on to record a good victory.

Young Stuart McLean, thrown in the deep end in his first team match, was subjected to a run of three birdies in four holes from Kevin Cattanach.

But Duddingston secured the points as Derrick Williams recorded a superb victory over Alan Anderson, the Lothians champion.

Anderson was three up after seven but Williams, helped by two lengthy pitch-ins, stuck to his task and gradually got back into the game, winning it with a birdie at the 17th.
After some recent defeats, Glencorse returned to winning ways as they pipped Musselburgh in a tense and exciting Section D battle.

"It was obvious from the start Musselburgh were desperate to try and get some sort of result from the order their team was played in with their big guns in the middle of the order and it almost worked," said Alastair Shanks.

With two matches left on the course the result was still hanging in the balance but Justin Lamb and Ian Shanks both delivered decisive blows as the won the 15th to go two up against Keith Aitken and Calum Burgess respectively.

"To have any chance of qualifying we needed to win our last three matches," added Shanks. "We've now got two more tough games to go, but awe may still make it though to the last eight if other result go our way." High-flying Musselburgh had already been brought back down to earth at Prestonfield, where the home team won 6…-1… in a top-versus-bottom clash.

Young gun Arran McHardy chalked up the first point against Myles Clapperton and Scott Johnston soon followed with another convincing win for the home team.

New boy Duncan Martin, still finding his feet and way at Prestonfield, was overcome by an-in form Kenny Wright but victories for the home side also came from Duncan Johnston, Fraser Murray, Ricky Myles and Neilson Rutherford, who was out in four-under on his way to beating Brian Henderson.
